Arctic Chamber Music Festival at Svalbard

The world's northernmost classical festival made by the world's northernmost orchestra - featuring classical and contemporary music, dance and unique experiences on a top notch level at the top of the world.

In the days between June 6th - 9th 2019, the musicians of the Norwegian Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra with friends will fill Svalbard with music, presenting some of their highlights from the orchestra program.

Arctic Philharmonic is the orchestra that forms a base for the whole festival. The orchestra have a unique structure, being based in two Norwegian towns, Bodø and Tromsø, and performes in several different constellations - as SInfonietta, Chamber Orchestra and the full Symphony Orchestra - as well as smaller groups. The orchestras home base comprises the entire Northern Norway and the High North, thus Longyearbyen is a natural location for the Arctic Philharmonic.

Arctic Philharmonic

Well north of the Arctic Circle, you will discover the world’s youngest and northernmost professional orchestral institution – the Norwegian Arctic Philharmonic. Since the founding in 2009, the Arctic Philharmonic has become one of Northern Norway’s largest and most active cultural institutions.

The orchestra presents around 150 performances and concerts each year, through Norway, Svalbard and abroad. 

The musicians of the Arctic Philharmonic are weekly switching between different ensemble formats on a regular basis, playing chamber music, sinfonietta, chamber orchestra, operas and symphony orchestra. The orchestra holds regular concerts in our two cities, Bodø and Tromsø, but the home base comprises the entire Northern Norway and the High North.

Since it's founding in 2009, the Arctic Philharmonic, have received stunning reviews for their recordings and their performances all over the world, and extended recording projects on BIS-records including a box of Tchaikovsky Symphonies as well as Nordic music from the Arctic Region and commissioned Northern music.

The ensembles of the Arctic Philharmonic, have during few years performed at venues like Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg, Beethovenfest Bonn (2014), Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg (2015) and Musikverein Vienna (2015), in addition to a tour of China in 2011 (Wu Promotion). Future invitations include a European tour (2018) and a Japan tour (2017).
