Evening*: Concert in Mine 7
Welcome to a concert in unusual surroundings. The main hall at the mine is converted into a concert hall – and the Arctic Sinfonietta performs excerpts from Lasse Thoresen’s brand new commissioned work The Sound of the Arctic. The orchestral work is inspired by Thoresen’s trips to Svalbard and Northern Norway’s snow-covered landscape. The premier performance took place at the Ultima Festival in September 2019. The work may be described as a phonetic polar expedition which explores the beauty and fear of a wilderness on the way to disappearing. Some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes are in the polar region. It also provides a shocking image of the climate crisis.

The orchestra will also play works by Missy Mazzoli before concluding with Svalbard Theme from the popular Norwegian film Orion’s Belt (1985), which was set in Svalbard during the Cold War. The music was composed by two of the grand old men ofNorwegian film music, Geir Bøhren and Bent Åserud.

With Arctic Philharmonic Sinfonietta, Conductor Tim Weiss at Mine 7
